About Fretful Realm
This Substack is an ongoing project to develop better answers to three questions:
What might the end of history actually look like (if there is one)?
What will emerging technology do to social structures (and vice versa)?
What should we do in the meantime?
I’m a Silicon Valley native who’s split his twenties between the Bay Area, DC, and a series of countries that don’t thrill my mom. I studied history and law, and have worked in geopolitics, global development, and tech policy. Mostly, I’m interested in making the world a little better than it was.
What’s with the name?
It’s from Tennyson’s “Locksley Hall”. (Sure, roll your eyes.)
“For I dipt into the future, far as human eye could see,
Saw the Vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be; ...
There the common sense of most shall hold a fretful realm in awe,
And the kindly earth shall slumber, lapped in universal law.”
